Establish which pipe is there

A pipe visible above the roof does not identify every section in the attic. Locate the chimney series in the original appliance or installation records. Ask the service professional to identify the pipe and any existing shield that is accessible. A roof photograph is a poor substitute for identifying parts at the ceiling.

Keep the required air space in the work order

For its DuraPlus system, DuraVent specifically directs that required clearance space stay free of insulation or other material. Different systems and components have their own dimensions. A general description such as “fire-resistant insulation” does not authorize filling that space. Do not move insulation or metalwork around a chimney yourself.

Agree on the inspection point

Have the insulation and fireplace providers agree who observes the penetration before work covers it and what they will record afterward. If work was already finished and the clearance is uncertain, leave the appliance off while arranging a review. Opening an enclosure should be a separately authorized decision.
