Separate a masonry chimney from an enclosed system

Describe whether you see exposed brick or masonry, a framed enclosure, or a metal vent. Do not remove components to find out. If the fireplace manual or model label is safely available, keep it for the appointment. The appearance of the enclosure alone is not enough to select a compatible termination or replacement part.

Define what a cover quote includes

Ask whether the proposed work addresses the opening cover, the wider chase top, the crown or another component. Clarify whether the assessment found additional concerns with supports, attachment or surrounding materials. A quote should state what is being replaced and what remains outside that work. Do not assume a generic metal cover is appropriate for every fireplace system.

Coordinate with the Town and any roof project

Davie's Building Division provides the Online Application Submittal route for permits and related service requests. If chimney work is part of a larger roofing project, ask the responsible contractor to explain how it appears in the project documents. The Town's current Building Division information is the place to check the process for the actual scope; an inspection appointment is not automatic authorization for an alteration.

Prepare the property information

Send the Davie address and tell us whether the chimney serves a fireplace in the main house or another structure. Note any active roof project and the person coordinating access. Stay clear of an area where loose material could fall. If a component is visibly displaced, keep the fireplace unused until its condition and required next step are assessed.
