Build a before-and-after appliance list

Use the old mechanical quote, current appliance labels and any existing photos. List the furnace and water heater separately. For each, note the fuel and the known old and new exhaust route. Mark an unknown connection instead of tracing it yourself. Two appliances near the same chimney may have used a common passage, separate passages or different vents altogether.

Distinguish flue condition from system sizing

A sound-looking chimney may need further evaluation when a smaller appliance is left venting alone. US Department of Energy furnace materials discuss the issue often called an orphaned water heater. Have the chimney professional document the relevant passage and accessible condition, and have the qualified mechanical or gas professional evaluate the remaining appliance's venting and operation. A clean flue photograph cannot complete that second job.

Hand the roofer a resolved drawing

If a reroof or demolition is planned, ask for a marked photograph showing what remains active, what was abandoned and what is unresolved. Keep that drawing with the mechanical records. Contact Oakland Park Permit Access for existing records if the change predates your ownership. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, evacuate and seek emergency assistance rather than waiting for a scheduled inspection.
